Last January, we were sitting at our table at the annual Xena Convention. The combination of low attendance this year and more and more people buying only ebooks made for a very boring and unsuccessful Convention for us. So much so that when we were making the long drive home, we looked at each other and laughed about how much of a bust it was.
So we're sitting at our table, Claudia trying to play Farmville on her Galaxy Tab and me watching college women's basketball games on my Galaxy Tab, with the occasional diversion of someone browsing through the books or coming to the table to chat.
We noticed we got a call and voice mail from someone in New York . . . and figured it was from one of our New York authors. Then we got an email from a Literary Agent--yes, in New York--who was wondering if we'd be interested in taking a quick look at a manuscript. A publisher was interested in this book, but the agent wasn't that interested in the publisher, and thanks to the author's fan letter to our own Ann McMan, we got on the agent's radar.
Fortunately, we had plenty of time for a quick look because we were sitting around for three days not selling books.
We love serendipity--our whole book selection process is based on it. And this case of serendipitous circumstances brought both a great book and a really neat author to the Bedazzled Ink universe and we're very proud to have the opportunity to publish it.
